Shadow work can be understood as doing the opposite of what most of us instinctually do about addiction, urges and unpleasant emotions. And that's a good idea, because what we usually do is clearly not working (this is explained by the What You Resist Persists principle).
In shadow work, instead of trying to resist, push away or run away from unpleasant feelings, we face them head on. We examine the difficult emotions and seek to understand them more deeply.
