Shine the Light of Awareness

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
- Carl Jung
It is our hidden, subconscious thoughts (and feelings) that actually drive our behavior. Especially our unwanted behavior.
These thoughts and feelings is what Carl Jung referred to as our shadow.
It's the part of us that we deny. We pretend like this part doesn't really exist. We don't want to thinka bout it and we most certainly don't want to confront it.
BUT... if we don't confront our shadow, it will continue to drive us into doing things we 'don't want to do'... and we will feel like helpless victims in the process.
The solution here is to Shine the Light of Awareness on our shadow.
To make ourselves aware of our subconscious drives. To bring them into our awareness.
This process is called Shadow Work.
Note: you can now also access a free QuitByHealing Shadow Work course. I recommend that you complete the current course first and then go to the Shadow Work course next, as it is a bit more advanced.
The process of Shadow Work is to become the observer of your own feelings, thoughts, and emotions. Even the difficult and unwanted ones. Even the ones you usually try to avoid.
The best way to do this is to write about your experience and write about what you are feeling when you get the urge to watch porn.
Don't act on the urge.
Instead, use the opportunity to explore what's going on at a deeper level.
And write out everything that comes up.
Write in as much detail as you can about what you're feeling, and where you're feeling it in your body.
This is a skill.
You won't get it right on the first try, but there are a few things you can do to improve:
- Practice Mindfulness Meditation. (links to free apps available below)
- Writing. Write out what you're feeling when you get the urge.
- Cold Exposure. Jump in an Ice Bath or Cold Plunge for 10 slow breaths.
